The devastating incident occurred at a charity event organized by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, better known as Obijackson, a philanthropist and prominent Chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The event, hosted by the Obijackson Foundation, was an annual program aimed at providing assistance to the less privileged in the community. However, the event turned chaotic as an overwhelming crowd scrambled for bags of rice, leading to the fatal stampede.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, confirmed the tragic loss of life in a statement issued on Sunday morning after visiting victims at the hospital. Superintendent Ikenga also revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, confirmed that other people were injured during the stampede, though specific details of their conditions have not yet been provided.
In his statement, the police commissioner expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and extended well wishes for the swift recovery of those injured.
