Humans have found and used natural materials to clean themselves and their possessions for thousands of years. There is evidence of soap being made with animal and vegetable oils combined with alkaline salts used all the way back in 2800 BC by the Ancient Babloynians.

It wasn’t until World War I and II that a shortage of animal and vegetable byproducts forced chemists to experiment with other raw materials, which they synthesized into chemicals with similar priorities. This is known today as detergents, which most cleaning products qualify as today.

So what alternatives are there to popular and readily available products like Clorox wipes and Tide Pods? Well, you probably already have all the ingredients you need at home or can easily pick them up on your next trip to the grocery store. All you need is baking soda or washing soda, white vinegar, lemon or essential oils, olive oil, castile soap and soap nuts.
Natural alternatives to cleaning products
Laundry detergent

While baking soda is known for neutralizing odor and can be used alone to do laundry, it is not as strong and effective as washing soda, a slightly different sodium compound. Washing soda has long been used as a cleaning aid because it is effective for deep cleaning and removing grease and tough stains.

You can also add a few drops of organic essential oils, which have antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, as well as add a wonderful aroma to your homemade product. Popular essential oil options include but are not limited to lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, rosemary, and eucalyptus.

All you have to do is add and mix the ingredients together and store them in an airtight container.

Another option is to consider buying soap nuts made from the dried fruit of the Chinese soapberry tree, which releases a soapy essence that acts as a natural detergent.

Just place half a dozen nuts in a cloth drawstring pouch and throw it in the washing machine with your clothes. If the load is heavily soiled, consider adding half a cup of baking soda to the wash. The soap nuts can be used a few times before turning gray. Make sure to remove the nuts from the pouch after each wash and let them dry.
Stain remover

If you stain your clothes or upholsteries, combine a quart cup of vinegar, a quarter cup of baking soda, one tablespoon of castile soap, and two cups of water into a spray bottle. You can similarly also add citric acid like lemon juice, which will help with discoloration as well as add a lovely scent.

Shake the solution and spray it directly onto the affected areas. For clothes, let it sit for up to 15 minutes before throwing it in the wash. For furniture, try scrubbing the stain with a bristle brush.
Dish soap

Castile soap is an affordable, eco-friendly, and chemical-free option easily found at grocery stores. The Spaniard compound is typically made with olive oil and sodium carbonate, however, sometimes alternative oils are used.

The product is highly versatile and can be used for everything from body wash to household cleaners. To make dish soap, combine one part castile soap with 10 parts hot water. You can also add a tablespoon of baking soda and a few drops of essential oils to the mixture if desired.
Countertop cleaner

You can add a cup of rubbing alcohol and a cup of water to make a disinfecting countertop cleaner that will remove stains, grease, and grime. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils, too, which will provide additional antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial properties to your product, as well as a lovely scent.
