Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming that there are plans to arrest and prosecute him after his term ends on May 28, 2027. The fundamental rights suit was lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 6, 2024, where he raised several legal concerns and sought multiple forms of relief.
Sanwo-Olu contends that any arrest attempt would violate his constitutional rights, particularly referencing sections of the 1999 Constitution that protect personal liberty and freedom of movement. He describes the EFCC’s actions as unconstitutional, arguing they infringe on his right to privacy and family life.
In his application, the governor requests that the court prevent the EFCC from intimidating or detaining him in connection with his gubernatorial duties. He also seeks an order to stop the agency from seizing his property, and passport, or freezing his and his family’s bank accounts.
In support of his claims, attorney Martha Kanu provided an affidavit alleging that the EFCC has been pressuring Sanwo-Olu’s aides and family members to provide damaging information based on false allegations of fund diversion. During a recent court session, Sanwo-Olu’s legal team stated that they had submitted updated documents, while the EFCC’s representatives noted they had not yet reviewed these filings. The case is scheduled for further mention on November 11. ..ALSO READ FULL FROM SOURCE ↔️
