The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered and returned N1,234,350,000 to the Enugu State Government after Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited failed to deliver on a contract to build 22 smart schools. The funds were part of a N2.29 billion advance payment made to the company.
The EFCC launched an investigation following a petition in February 2025, which alleged fraudulent diversion of project funds by the company’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Olasijibomi Ogundele.
During the handover, EFCC officials reiterated the agency’s commitment to recovering public funds and warned contractors to adhere to procurement laws.
Key Points:
The recovery demonstrates the EFCC’s role in checking financial misconduct in public contracts and ensuring restitution to state governments.
It highlights vulnerabilities in contract administration and advance payment systems within state procurement processes.
The case may prompt stricter due diligence and monitoring of high-value contractors by state governments across Nigeria.
The EFCC’s warning signals increased scrutiny on contractors handling public funds, with potential legal consequences for non-performance.
The successful handover reinforces inter-agency collaboration and public confidence in anti-graft institutions.
