“I’m not happy in Nigeria; we can’t continue to breed poverty; that’s not leadership. We live in a largely unproductive society, which is why the only things that seem attractive here are politics and religion,” he remarked in a clip from the podcast released on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
In a bid to tackle the menace, the former Anambra State Governor mentioned that he would transform vigils into night shifts, adding that too much time is spent attending church services from Monday to Friday.
“We have to dismantle it. I’d rather turn night vigils into night shifts so people can be productive. I go to church; I believe in God,” he noted, stressing that it’s unacceptable for people to attend church from Monday to Friday, morning and night.
“If I travel from here to my house, the only signboards you see are those of churches. If you go to the East, it’s burials, and that’s not a country. In other countries, you’ll see products,” he added.
His statement caused an uproar within and outside Nigeria. A pastor in Ghana angered by Obi’s comment claims that his actions are what led to his defeat in the 2023 presidential election.
The cleric further said that Peter Obi will never win following his plans for the church. According to him, even President Bola Tinubu, who is a Muslim, has more respect for Christians and would not dare carry out such an act.
He said, “One presidential candidate in Nigeria said when he comes to power, he is going to stop all night prayers. I say that’s why you didn’t even win. You will never win too. Everybody thought you were a Christian.
The whole church was rooting for him. But unbeknownst to the churches, this secret that was hidden in his heart has come out. You want to stop prayer? Are you a Christian? No, you are not. Take prayer out of the church, take prayer out of society, and see what would become of society.
Look at America; look at Europe; what is becoming of them? They have the money; they have everything, but look at the foolishness that is going on there. Man sleeping with man, woman sleeping with woman and this is what you want us to subscribe to? That’s paganism. Where the seat of the devil has taken over.
Go to those places, you see the Muslim crowd will not even try to stop their prayer. The Muslim president wouldn’t even dare because he respects the church. Our own is saying that its going to stop prayer in the night and we need to be productive in the night. Look at what the church has been able to do in Nigeria.
