Since Ajuri Ngelale’s departure in September 2024, the presidency has appointed Daniel Bwala as his replacement.
In an interview on Channels Television Politics Today with Seun Okinbaloye, Daniel Bwala expressed his excitement about working with Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, and Sunday Dare, who was the former Special Adviser on Public Communication and National Orientation, and is now appointed as Special Adviser, Media and Public Communications.
Concerns have been raised about the job description of these three appointees. However, in the interview with Channels Television Politics Today, on Monday November 18, 2024, Bwala claims that the roles are different although he wasn’t in a position to explain the others job descriptions.
Bwala described Onanuga as a brilliant journalist and an elder statesman who has served the country well, emphasizing his respect and admiration for him.
He noted that although he has not been informed if Bayo Onanuga will be the leader of the three roles, Bwala mentioned that he is happy if he leads as he can never compete with him.
The conversation between Bwala and Seun is as follows:
Seun Okinbaloye: So you’re going to be a boss to Bayo Onanuga?
Daniel Bwala: No
Seun Okinbaloye : Who is leading the president’s comms
Daniel Bwala: Bayo Onanuga is an elder statesman. He is a very brilliant journalist who has a proven record, and we are happy he is leading us.
Seun Okinbaloye: So he is the leader of the president’s comms?
Daniel Bwala: I’m happy for him to lead. I’ve not been told officially, but I’m happy for him to lead because he is an elder and we respect him. He has served Nigeria well and has a proven record as a journalist. I can never be drawn into a situation where I will rub shoulders with the man. I doff my cap for him.
Seun Okinbaloye: So your job is well cut out in your JD?
Daniel Bwala: My own is if you say go and carry that table, I will go and do it. That is my work. Its not about title.
Seun Okinbaloye: What’s the difference between your job and that of Bayo Onanuga?
Daniel Bwala: I’m not here to define anybody’s job.
Seun Okinbaloye: Don’t you know your own JD?
Daniel Bwala: I’m the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication.
After Ngelale’s departure, there was confusion as Onanuga took over as the presidential spokesman.
He was also reported to have moved to the office previously occupied by Ngelale at the presidential villa.
Meanwhile, Bwala stated that he takes over from Ngelale as the presidential spokesperson, highlighting that there has only been a change in office nomenclature.
He said, “When Ajuri was there, the nomenclature was Special Adviser On Media And Publicity, and now that role is called Special Adviser on Media And Public Communications (State House). Sunday Dare works from the office of the Minister of Information.”
This development has caused a stir among Nigerians who expressed concerns on why the government has refused to cut the cost of governance.
