Lucas’ bizarre explanation for the killings was captured on police bodycam footage, which was recently posted by Law and Crime. She claimed she loved her sons but believed video games, WiFi, and YouTube were “manipulating” them and her. “I wouldn’t have hurt them, but I just felt like I wasn’t focusing on them the way I should,” she said. She blamed “something put upon” her and insisted, “I’m not crazy.”
Despite claiming the shootings were an “accident,” Lucas admitted to firing four shots within 30 seconds and acknowledged no one else was home. She also told police she felt “manipulated through Facebook, the internet, or WiFi.” The tragic events began when Lucas collapsed on a neighbor’s driveway, screaming hysterically that her children were dying. Police found the boys with gunshot wounds inside the home, a gun on the bed, and evidence of four shots captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera. Both boys died shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Lucas’ behavior before and after the murders raised questions about her mental state. Michelle Rice, the stepmother of Maurice, accused Lucas of hiding drug issues and presenting a false image on social media. “She never worked, and the boys had been taken from her before because of drugs,” Rice said. She also expressed the family’s desire for the death penalty, calling Lucas’s actions irredeemable.
Footage from the day before the murders showed Lucas behaving erratically at a Waffle House, described by staff as being in her “own world.” Lucas’ social media posts painted a different picture, showcasing loving messages about her children.
