The letter dated November 30, 1983, was titled “Feeding our 2,300 children” and was addressed to parents of students at the school explaining the reasons for a fee increase.
In the letter, Solarin explained that the fee increment was necessary due to the socio-economic situation in the country that year, under the government of Shehu Shagari.
He lamented the high price of a bag of beans, which was selling for N200, and mentioned that students would have to pay an additional N20 to their boarding fees. He appealed to the parents for their understanding.
This letter sparked various reactions from Nigerians who shared their thoughts. Some believed that the past was always better than the present.
Given the current state of the country, Nigerians now pay N200, 000 for a bag of beans, compared to the N200 price 41 years ago.
Today, N20 is insignificant as it cannot purchase any valuable item, not even sachet water from street vendors.
Here are some reactions.
