The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has firmly opposed any plans to sell the 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity Dangote Refinery to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). In a communiqué signed by Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu and Rev. Nicholas Daniel Jatau, the convener and co-convener of ATT, respectively, the organization condemned the alleged plans by NNPCL to disrupt the Dangote Refinery’s formal launch.
The communiqué states: “We note that NNPCL’s alleged smear campaign against the quality of Dangote Refinery’s products aims to hinder President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to revive the nation’s economy. However, we do not believe reports that Aliko Dangote offered to sell his refinery to NNPCL and see such claims as acts of frustration forced upon him by NNPCL.”
ATT criticized NNPCL as a hindrance to progress in Nigeria’s oil sector, suggesting that some individuals within NNPCL are interested in maintaining the subsidy scam. They stated, “If NNPCL shows interest in buying Dangote Refinery, it is likely an attempt to undermine President Tinubu’s efforts to address the fuel crisis in the country by frustrating the Dangote Refinery’s role in complementing these efforts. We do not want NNPCL to frustrate President Bola Tinubu’s government from improving socio-economic conditions for the citizenry.”
ATT also questioned NNPCL’s capability to manage an investment as significant as the Dangote Refinery, given its past failures to efficiently operate the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries.
