According to reports, the assailants intercepted Dr. Osita’s vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, with the apparent intent of stealing it. When the lecturer resisted their attempt to hijack the car, he was shot in the head and died instantly. The attackers, after abandoning his lifeless body, drove away in the stolen vehicle.
A witness who spoke to The PUNCH confirmed the incident, saying, “Yes, he was shot dead in that high-tension area yesterday evening. Some individuals are stating that he was a lecturer at UNIZIK and hailed from Nteje.” The source also added, “The hoodlums blocked his car and when he resisted, they shot him in the head. He was already dead before help could reach him.”
The witness further noted the growing insecurity in the area, calling for caution during the festive period. “The insecurity in this area is becoming a serious concern. If they come for your car, it’s best to surrender it. Our lives are far more important,” the witness advised.
Dr. Osita was a respected lecturer in the Business Department at UNIZIK. The Chief Security Officer of the university, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the details of the incident, stating that it took place around 7:30 pm on Monday. Chukwurah explained that the assailants attempted to steal Dr. Osita’s car, and when he resisted, they shot him. “The incident has left the entire university community in mourning. It is important to note that the killing occurred outside the university premises,” he added.
The university community, particularly members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have expressed their deep grief over the tragic loss. They have also mobilized plans to visit the Government House in Awka to voice their concerns about the rising insecurity in the region.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the murder and assured the public that an investigation had begun. “The Anambra State Police Command has started an investigation into the murder of Mr. Fabian Osita, a staff member of the University of Nnamdi Azikiwe. The incident occurred on 16th December 2024 at approximately 10:10 pm at Aroma Junction,” Ikenga stated.
Ikenga also revealed that the perpetrators had stolen Dr. Osita’s car, a 2006 model Toyota Corolla, which was ash-colored and had an Enugu license plate. The police have urged anyone with information about the crime or the vehicle’s whereabouts to come forward. “We encourage members of the public to report any relevant details to the nearest police station or contact our control room at 07039194332, or the PPRO at 08039334002,” Ikenga added.
The police spokesperson also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to the management of UNIZIK.
