The blast, which was allegedly triggered by an explosive device hidden inside an electric scooter, occurred outside an apartment building in the Russian capital. This attack is seen as one of the most audacious and targeted killings of a high-ranking military official since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Kirillov, who headed the Russian military’s chemical, biological, and radiological weapons unit, was killed alongside his assistant when the device detonated as they were leaving a residential building in southeast Moscow on Tuesday.
A source within Ukraine’s SBU security service confirmed that Kyiv was behind the operation, marking the most significant assassination of a senior Russian military figure far from the frontlines since the onset of the Russian invasion nearly three years ago.
