Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command in connection with the tragic stampede that occurred at a children’s carnival she organized. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, has resulted in the deaths of at least 35 minors, with six others reported to be in critical condition.
The Oyo State Police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Thursday, noting that Naomi, aged 31, was detained along with seven other individuals involved in organizing the event. Among those arrested is Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school where the event was held.
Arrests and Investigation
According to Osifeso, the police have taken significant action, arresting eight individuals in total for their roles in the event. “The Oyo State Police Command can confirm that eight persons have been arrested for their involvement in the tragic incident. Among those detained are Silekunola and Abdulahi, the school principal,” Osifeso said.
The stampede has left 35 minors dead and six others critically injured. The injured children are receiving various medical interventions as authorities work to address the aftermath of the disaster.
Investigation and Security Measures
Osifeso further stated that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation. The Deputy Commissioner of Police will lead the inquiry, ensuring that justice is served in connection with this devastating incident.
In response to the heightened situation, the police have increased their presence in the area to maintain peace and prevent any potential unrest. Residents have been reassured not to panic, as additional police patrols will be visible in the community.
