This jump in value places Lookman as Nigeria’s second most valuable player, just behind Victor Osimhen, whose market value stands at €75 million. Lookman now surpasses Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, who is valued at €45 million.
Lookman’s surge in value is largely attributed to his extraordinary performances in 2024, culminating in his victory of the prestigious CAF Player of the Year award. His win over formidable contenders such as Simon Adingra from Ivory Coast, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, and Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy highlights his remarkable season. Lookman’s efforts also earned him a 14th place ranking in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings, further solidifying his reputation on the global stage.
The 27-year-old winger’s rise to prominence over the past two seasons has firmly established him as one of Nigeria’s brightest football talents. At the close of 2023, Lookman was valued at €30 million, but his stellar year saw a meteoric €25 million increase in his market value, reflecting a remarkable growth of 83.33%.
By June 2024, Lookman’s stock had risen even further following his sensational performance in the UEFA Europa League final. He scored a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Leverkusen, securing the club’s first-ever European title and propelling his value to €40 million.
Jatin Dietl, Transfermarkt’s Italy Area Manager, commented on Lookman’s success: “Lookman capped off his extraordinary 2024 with the African Ballon d’Or, and deservedly so. He has been in outstanding form, playing a key role in Atalanta’s success and helping them claim their first international title.”
Prior to this remarkable rise, Lookman had attracted significant interest from top European clubs, including PSG, Arsenal, and Liverpool, who expressed a desire to sign him during the previous summer transfer window. However, as Lookman’s value continues to grow, Atalanta may face challenges in keeping hold of him.
