Recently, numerous subscribers experienced disruptions to their phone services as telecom companies enforced the NIN-SIM synchronization policy, leading to the blocking of unverified lines.
This action affected millions of mobile phone users who had not completed the verification process, resulting in involuntary disconnections from their network providers.
The NCC’s directive aims to address the widespread inconvenience caused by the sudden blocking of phone lines, ensuring that affected subscribers can regain access to their mobile services. A visit to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office in Ikeja, Lagos, and various telecommunications customer service centers on Monday revealed that many subscribers were visiting to rectify issues with their linkage or to link their NIN to their SIMs.
In a press statement released on Monday afternoon and signed by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, the regulatory commission emphasized that consumers are its priority. It directed all operators to reactivate all lines disconnected over the weekend, considering the limited time available for consumers to complete the NIN-SIM verification process.
The statement read: “The consumer is our priority; therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the Commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend in view of the short time available for consumers to undertake the verification of their NINs with their SIMs. Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM.”
