Diri recalled how Jonathan’s decisions at key moments altered his political path, ultimately turning what seemed like a setback into a blessing in disguise.
Speaking in Yenagoa at a service of songs in honor of the late Madam Ani-Gunn Rhoda Ikiogha, the mother of Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, a former Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Agriculture in Bayelsa, Diri reflected on his long political relationship with both the late Madam Ikiogha and her son. He described them as political mentors and partners, with both he and Ikiogha being “political sons” of Jonathan, long before he became president.
Diri explained that, despite their shared political history, there was a time when he and Chief Ikiogha parted ways due to differing political interests. At that time, they had aligned their ambitions to contest for parliamentary seats, with Diri aiming for the Senate and Ikiogha eyeing the House of Representatives. “We had agreed that I should go to the Senate and Chief Ikiogha to the House of Reps,” Diri said, adding that they even purchased the necessary nomination forms.

However, Diri noted that Jonathan, as president, had his own political agenda, which ultimately superseded theirs. “We knew that our boss in Abuja had his own agenda, which we could not stop,” he explained.
The governor continued, saying that this divergence of plans led to a fallout between him and Ikiogha. “For the very first time, we parted ways,” Diri said, explaining that Jonathan’s political strategy paved the way for his own election to the House of Representatives in 2015, as the Senate position was zoned to Yenagoa, a seat Ikiogha could not secure. Despite this, Diri acknowledged that Ikiogha was a key contributor to his success in the 2023 re-election campaign, even going so far as to risk being targeted by the opposition for supporting him.
Diri also praised the late Madam Ikiogha, highlighting her role as a unifying figure in both her family and the broader political community, including those from opposing camps. “She was always accommodating,” he noted. He encouraged the Ikiogha family to take solace in the fact that she left behind a strong legacy as a devoted Christian, with a life that touched many in various ways.
