The newspaper highlighted that the president’s reform policies over the past year have had a profound impact on Nigerians, with both positive and negative consequences that have affected people of all ages, professions, and economic statuses.
In its editorial, The Will noted that the government’s removal of the fuel subsidy and the decision to float the Naira had a significant negative impact on the already fragile economy. These reforms led to a sharp increase in fuel prices, which in turn caused a spike in the cost of logistics and food items. The editorial further emphasized the consequences of these economic changes, citing that Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose to 34.60 percent in November 2024, up from 33.88 percent in October. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), this represented a 6.40 percentage point increase compared to the same month in 2023, reflecting the inflationary pressures felt across the country.
The inflationary impact was not limited to overall price levels; the NBS report also indicated that food inflation had surged. The prices of essential items, such as yam, maize, rice, and cooking oils, saw sharp increases, contributing to a rise in the cost of living. On a month-on-month basis, food inflation rose by 2.98 percent in November 2024, marking a slight increase from the previous month.
The editorial further pointed out that these inflationary pressures have severely affected Nigerians from all walks of life. From the business sector to the employed and unemployed, the broader population has felt the strain of the economic reforms. As a result, many Nigerians have resorted to social media, coining the term “T-Pain” (Tinubu Pain) to express their frustrations with the harsh realities of these policies. However, the government’s communication team rebranded it as “Temporary Pain,” with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu suggesting that it should be called “T-Gain” (Tinubu Gains), attempting to reframe the situation as a necessary process for long-term benefits.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: WHY YOU MUST NOT FAIL TO HAVE $EX BY 12PM.
