His comments came during a media chat on Monday night, in response to concerns about the projected ₦13.39 trillion deficit in the proposed 2025 national budget, which the government plans to finance through borrowing.
Tinubu emphasized that the country’s severe infrastructural deficit necessitates borrowing to address pressing development needs. He argued that borrowing is a legitimate and essential tool for financing long-term projects that can help move the nation forward.
“Borrowing is not criminal. We have been facing a mismatch between our needs and available resources,” Tinubu explained. “The country has a serious infrastructural deficit, and addressing it requires significant investment. If we borrow large sums to fund long-term projects, it’s not a mismatch—it’s about ensuring the sustainability of these projects over time.”
The president acknowledged past mistakes but stressed that his focus was on securing a prosperous future for Nigeria. “Yes, we may have taken the wrong path in the past, but I don’t want to dwell on that. What matters now is how we can create prosperity for our nation,” he said.
Tinubu further outlined that the borrowings would primarily fund capital projects, which are critical for the country’s development. He highlighted several areas that need urgent attention, including deteriorating road infrastructure, inadequate internet access, and ongoing challenges in the power sector. “Our roads are in terrible condition, our internet infrastructure is not where it should be, and we are still struggling with power generation and efficiency,” he said. “These are fundamental areas where investment is urgently needed, and we must tackle them head-on.”V!EW BEFORE THEY GOT DELETED| Baltazar FROM Equatorial Guinea TRENDS AGAIN AS OVER 50 OF HIS FRESH BEDR00M V!DEOS SVRFACES ONLINE.
