Onokpasa, who is a strong supporter of President Bola Tinubu, expressed regret that the administration has failed to fulfill its promise of ensuring food availability for all Nigerians.
In an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, Onokpasa emphasized that the government must take immediate action to address hunger in the country. He described the stampedes, which took place in Okija, Ibadan, and Maitama, as tragic and called for greater efforts to alleviate the high cost of food items.
“The stampede is most unfortunate. The lives that were lost may they rest in peace. I think the real problem is that we have just failed woefully in producing food for our citizens,” Onokpasa said. He recalled that during the election campaign, President Tinubu had repeatedly promised to prioritize food production. However, Onokpasa lamented that the country has yet to achieve this goal, despite the president’s commitments.
Onokpasa admitted that the failure to ensure adequate food production is a national shortcoming. He added, “When we were campaigning for this administration, the people were calling us Agbadorians because our president was always talking about producing food. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to be able to produce the food.”
The APC chieftain further stressed that even if the government is unable to reduce fuel prices or tackle other economic issues, ensuring that citizens have access to affordable food should be the top priority. “We just have to accept that’s our fault,” he said. “The good thing about agriculture is that you can plant a crop today and harvest in three months, in six months, or in one year. We try to convince our president to concentrate on food production.”
Onokpasa concluded with a call for urgent action to address the spiraling cost of food, saying, “Even if we cannot reduce the price of petrol or whatever else, let our people have food to eat. Let our citizens have food to eat. It’s a shame that we have allowed prices to skyrocket, especially of food. Let people just have food to eat. That’s my take on it.”BREAKING NEWS|TAP TO VIEW THE FULL V!DEO, FATHER ARRESTED FOR BEHE4DING HIS 1 YEAH OLD SON AND CAUSING INJURY TO HIS WIFE AND MOTHER IN-LAW.
