The announcement follows the LPDC’s dismissal of a petition from Chief Afe Babalola’s law firm, Emmanuel Chambers, which sought to revoke Farotimi’s legal license.
Allegations Against Farotimi
The petition, filed by Emmanuel Chambers through lawyer Mr. Ola Faro, accused Farotimi of criminal defamation and professional misconduct. The allegations stemmed from claims made in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Criminal Justice System, where he criticized the Supreme Court and the legal profession.
The book specifically referenced case SC/146/2006 between Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu and HRH Oba Tijani Akinloye, alleging corruption, bribery, and unethical practices within the judiciary. The petition further claimed that Farotimi distorted case facts, disrespected fellow lawyers, and obstructed justice for personal gain.
Emmanuel Chambers argued that these actions violated the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023 and called for his disbarment.
LPDC’s Ruling
In its report (B8B/LPDC/1571/2024), the LPDC ruled that the alleged offences occurred in Farotimi’s capacity as an author, not in his professional role as a lawyer. The committee concluded it lacked jurisdiction over matters involving publications and advised the complainants to seek redress through regular courts.
Farotimi’s Response
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, his first public appearance since being released on bail over separate defamation charges, Farotimi vowed to take legal action against those involved in what he described as his “abduction.”
“I will be seeking legal reliefs and redresses against everyone involved in my abduction. I shall be defending each and every one of the many suits—civil and criminal—that have been filed against me rigorously,” he stated.
Farotimi also declared his readiness to hold lawyers accountable, pledging to write petitions to the LPDC to ensure that certain individuals are barred from practising law in Nigeria.
From Victim to Advocate
Farotimi asserted his transformation from a victim of the Nigerian justice system to an advocate for reform:
“I remain your brother, I remain Dele Farotimi Esq., SAN—Senior Accused of Nigeria, victim of Nigeria, but a conscious victim capable of articulating the conditions of the victim. I am not a victim anymore; I am a threat.”
Broader Implications
Farotimi’s legal battles and his continued advocacy against systemic injustices have reignited debates on freedom of speech, judicial accountability, and professional ethics in Nigeria.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY| SEE THE IMPORTED RICE THAT HAS KILLED 935k PEOPLE IN NIGERIA JUST NOW.
