Gists9ja reports that in a New Year message titled “In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,” NLC President Joe Ajaero highlighted the critical role of citizen-focused governance in driving national progress. The statement underscored the importance of ensuring that government policies prioritize the welfare of the people and reflect transparency, fairness, and inclusivity.
Criticism of Tax Reform Bills
The proposed tax reforms have sparked widespread opposition, particularly from stakeholders in northern Nigeria, where they are seen as counterproductive to economic growth. The NLC reiterated its commitment to dialogue, insisting that any tax reforms must be shaped collaboratively to gain nationwide acceptance and achieve their intended developmental goals.
According to the congress, the federal government must recognize the implications of these bills and ensure that all voices are heard before implementing reforms that will affect the lives of millions of Nigerians.
Call for Improved Governance
The NLC called on all tiers of government to place citizens’ welfare at the forefront of their policies in 2025. The organization stressed that governance should translate into tangible benefits for the populace, such as improved access to food, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, and enhanced security.
“Government policies must embody transparency and inclusivity,” the message read. “They must avoid nepotism, coercion, and divisive tactics, instead fostering a system built on social dialogue and cooperation.”

The congress announced plans for a national dialogue scheduled to take place in Ibadan in January 2025. In addition to opposing the Tax Reform Bills, the NLC emphasized the urgent need for the government to prioritize workers’ welfare. The congress reiterated its demand for full compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and called for a wage review to reflect the country’s current economic realities.
“Nigerian workers must earn incomes that meet their basic needs,” Ajaero said. “This will not only improve their quality of life but also enhance productivity and commitment in the workplace.”
The NLC warned against the use of force or violence in engagements with workers and unions, stating that such approaches would only lead to industrial disharmony. The congress pledged its continued commitment to constructive dialogue, ensuring that workers’ rights and national development remain central to its advocacy.
