Hundreds of Diploma graduates of Lagos State University (LASU), set of 2022/2023, have accused the institution of breaching its promise of seamless admission into degree programmes through Direct Entry (DE), despite many meeting the set academic requirements.
In a statement signed by the Students and obtained by SaharaReporters, the affected students said the university has failed to act fairly, transparently, or consistently in handling the admission process.
They said this had left many of them stranded and emotionally distressed, even as lectures have commenced for the new session.
The students, who completed the three-year Diploma programme run by LASU, said that at the point of admission into the programme, they were guaranteed DE placement into LASU’s degree courses, provided they maintained a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50.
However, the university has failed to fulfil this pledge, they said, despite a significant number of students surpassing the requirement, including those with CGPA as high as 4.30 and above.
The statement read, “We, the Diploma Students of Lagos State University (LASU), Set 2022/2023, issue this public statement to the media, civil society, and the general public regarding the ongoing injustice in the Direct Entry (DE) admission process that has left hundreds of students stranded despite meeting the established requirements.
“For three years, we dedicated our time, finances, and effort to a programme that expressly promised Direct Entry admission for students with a minimum CGPA of 3.50. Many of us surpassed this requirement, yet the admission process has failed to reflect fairness, transparency, or consistency.
“As a result, we make the following clear, urgent demands: “Immediate and fair consideration for all Diploma students who met the CGPA requirement.
The university must uphold its original promise that students with CGPA 3.50 and above are eligible for Direct Entry into the degree programme.
“All students with CGPA of 4.30 and above should be given their course of interest.
“These students have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and should be placed in their chosen degree programmes without delay.”
They said, “Students with CGPA below 4.30 but above the required 3.50 should be considered for closely related courses. No eligible student should be denied the opportunity to transition into the degree programme, even if it requires adjusting the course to a relevant alternative.
“Release of a supplementary or additional admission list immediately. Time is running out, lectures have started, and every delay results in loss of academic days and emotional distress for students and parents.
“Transparency and accountability in the admission process. LASU management should clearly state the criteria used in this year’s DE screening and provide justification for the current denial of qualified students.”
The statement emphasised that the students are not seeking to disrupt the university’s operations but are instead calling for justice, fairness, and the fulfilment of the promise made to them.
“We are not here to fight or disrupt the peace of the institution. We are simply asking for justice, fairness, and the fulfilment of the promise made to us at the beginning of our programme.
“We have done our part — we studied, we paid our fees, we completed our programme, and we met the required CGPA. We now demand that LASU does its part.
“We call on the media, students’ rights advocates, social justice movements, and the general public to stand with us in amplifying this cause until every qualified student receives the admission they have earned through hard work,” they added..view more
