BREAKING NEWS: Borno Police Re-Arrest Convict Who Escaped During Flood

The flood caused the collapse of the facility’s perimeter fence, allowing several inmates to flee.

Initially, prison authorities had denied any escapes but later disclosed that 274 inmates had been on the run.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil confirmed the successful re-arrest of Mohammed in a statement released on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old convict was serving a sentence for culpable homicide at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri when he escaped.

On September 15, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a resident from Bulakara Ward in Gubio Local Government Area reported seeing Mohammed in Gubio town. Prompt action by a police patrol team led to his apprehension.

Mohammed will be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service. The police continue to search for other escaped inmates who might still be at large in the region.

The statement reads:

“The Borno is pleased to announce the successful re-arrest of an escaped convict, Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a jail term for culpable homicide and had escaped from the medium-security custodian centre in Maiduguri.

“On September 15, 2024, at about 1500HRS, a resident of Bulakara Ward, Gubio LGA, alerted the police after sighting Abubakar in Gubio town following his escape from the Medium Security Custodial Center, Maiduguri, due to the collapse of the fence wall caused by a flood disaster.
