Azuta-Mbata, a former senator who represented Rivers East in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2007, was elected during a meeting held in Enugu on Friday.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the successful leadership transition within Ohanaeze Ndigbo and urged the new leadership to build on the principles established by their predecessors.
Tinubu Highlights Role of Socio-Cultural Groups in Nation-Building
The President emphasized the importance of socio-cultural organizations like Ohanaeze Ndigbo in fostering national unity and promoting dialogue among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen inter-ethnic harmony.
President Tinubu also wished Senator Azuta-Mbata success in his leadership role, describing it as a challenging yet noble responsibility critical to advancing the interests of the Igbo community and contributing to national development.
Leadership Dispute Rocks Ohanaeze Ndigbo
Despite the congratulatory message, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is currently embroiled in controversy, as two individuals have claimed the position of President-General.
On one side, Senator John Azuta-Mbata was declared the 13th President-General during the election in Enugu. On the other, Dim Uche Nnam Okwukwu, a prominent lawyer and activist, was also announced as President-General during a parallel convention held in Port Harcourt.
According to reports by the Daily Post, the Port Harcourt election was organized by the Progressive Movement in Igboland, with returning officer Achi Achi stating that Okwukwu was elected unopposed after a two-day process spanning Thursday and Friday.
