UTWEETS Yakubu made this known on Friday while defending the implementation of the 2024 budget before the National Assembly. He emphasized that the electoral commission is struggling to operate effectively due to inadequate funding.

According to Yakubu, INEC’s budget for 2024 has been slashed to ₦40 billion, far below the ₦80 billion initially proposed. This significant reduction, he noted, has placed enormous strain on the commission’s ability to fulfill its mandate as one of the largest employers in the country.

“We are operating under extreme financial pressure, and this limits our capacity to execute our responsibilities efficiently,” he stated.

To address these challenges, Yakubu called for a retreat involving the National Assembly and INEC. He suggested that such a forum could facilitate discussions, foster collaboration, and generate innovative solutions to the financial and operational difficulties affecting the electoral process.

“We need a major conversation. The commission cannot continue conducting elections all year round,” Yakubu stressed.

In addition to financial constraints, Yakubu highlighted the worsening state of INEC’s infrastructure. He revealed that many of the commission’s 860 buildings nationwide are in dire need of repairs, further compounding its operational challenges.

INEC has submitted a ₦126 billion budget proposal for 2024, which Yakubu described as critical to ensuring the commission’s effectiveness. He urged lawmakers to provide sufficient funding to enable INEC to maintain its facilities, improve its operations, and deliver credible elections.

“This funding is crucial for addressing the current issues and ensuring the integrity of our electoral system,” Yakubu concluded.TOP SECRET REVEALED FINALLY!
