The Avian Influenza is a disease that affects birds including fowls, turkeys, layers and guinea fowls.

According to the circular by the authorities, there is an increase risk of the spread of the disease if not handled properly especially during this outbreak.

Olasoju said it is important that systems are activated to contain the spread of the disease by adhering to strict biosecurity measures and close monitoring of poultry populations to detect and respond to potential cases promptly.

He also said that agencies should set up public awareness campaigns to educate citizens and farmer, especially poultry owners on measure to take to identify and avoid the spread of the disease.

He said, “We need to take adequate preventive measures,” the circular emphasised, urging stakeholders to work collectively to prevent the virus from spreading to neighbouring states and other regions.”

Also, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Kano State chapter, Usman Gwarzo provided details of the disease citing a recent case in Kano.

He said, “In December 2024, a young man from Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Local Government Area bought a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA and introduced it to his flock of hens and chickens.”

According to Gwarzo, the bird died suddenly and its death was followed by that of the chickens in the flock.

He also said that the carcasses of the deceased birds were taken to Gwale veterinary clinic and it was suspected that the animals died from avian influenza.

Further speaking, Gwarzo said a second sample was sent for testing – for confirmation – in the first week of January 2025.What Is Your Opinion On This? The Table Is Turning.
