Speaking with Sean Hannity for an interview that aired on Wednesday and Thursday on Fox News, Trump addressed the war, which he once again claimed would not have started had he been president.
“Putin shouldn’t have done it,” Trump said. “He shouldn’t have done it and it has to stop. You know, they’ve lost about 850,000 Russian soldiers and 700,000 Ukrainian soldiers.”
Trump’s figures are almost certainly overstated, as researchers have estimated the Russian death toll at 150,000 and the Ukrainian toll at 62,000.
“Will it be a negotiated settlement and will you lead the negotiations?” Hannity asked.
“Well, I hope so,” Trump responded before promising to impose “massive tariffs on Russia” if Putin does not end the war. However, U.S. imports from Russia are paltry, and so tariffs would likely have little impact.
“And Zelensky, I will say he wants to settle now,” Trump claimed “He’s had enough. He shouldn’t have allowed this to happen either. You know, he’s no angel. He shouldn’t have allowed this war to happen. First of all, he’s fighting a much bigger entity, ok?
