The 40-year-old unemployed man was brought before the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, accused of criminal trespass and theft by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Gandu admitted to stealing two yam tubers due to hunger, stating, “hunger pushed me to steal yam on two occasions. I beg for leniency.”

Presiding Judge Michael Bawa reserved sentencing until August 6 after Gandu’s guilty plea and ordered his remand.

NSCDC Prosecutor Marcus Audu informed the court that the complainant, Alice Daniel, reported the theft at the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on July 15.
