According to eyewitnesses, Ndelema was caught in the act of stealing the goat from a kraal in Makanani. The owner of the kraal reportedly alerted a group of villagers, who apprehended Ndelema and began beating him severely.

Despite his pleas, the mob proceeded to burn him to death.
