A viral video surfaced in which a man claimed that police officers shot a teenager while dispersing protesters in Kubwa.

However, the FCT police command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, released a statement on Saturday clarifying that officers deployed to the area were not equipped with lethal weapons capable of causing death.

“In response to the circulating video footage alleging the killing of a yet-to-be-identified teenager by police operatives in Kubwa near Zenith Bank during protests on August 3, 2024, the FCT police command refutes the claims,” Adeh stated.

“The operatives deployed were only issued anti-riot equipment, not lethal arms that could result in such a tragedy.”

In reaction to the incident, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation to determine the actual cause of the teenager’s death.

“Given the seriousness of the incident, the Commissioner of Police has directed an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death,” Adeh continued.

“We urge well-meaning residents to provide any necessary information to assist the investigation.”

The Commissioner expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that justice would be served.

“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for this unfortunate incident,” Adeh added.

Additionally, the command cautioned against misinformation, warning residents about potential mischief makers exploiting the current situation to spread false narratives and cause unrest.
