The governors who allegedly backed Damagum’s suspension include Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori of Delta State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, and Pastor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State.

However, it appears that not all PDP governors are on the same page, as some have expressed support for Damagum’s continued leadership. This internal conflict has raised concerns about the party’s unity and ability to present a strong opposition in the 2027 elections.

According to Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, the newly appointed Acting National Chairman, the party’s North Central Zone is entitled to produce a replacement for Damagum, in line with the party’s constitution. Mohammed has requested the zone to nominate a replacement to serve out the tenure of former National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu. The nominee is expected to be forwarded to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and approval at the October 24, 2024 meeting.

The party’s North Central Zone is entitled to produce a replacement for Damagum, in line with the party’s constitution.
