Utweets reports that during an official visit to Enugu State, Tinubu praised Nnamani, stating that certain individuals attempted to “derail democracy” by pushing for a third term, but it was Nnamani who “saved the situation.” Nnamani, who served as Senate President from 2005 to 2007, was instrumental in blocking the proposal that would have allowed Obasanjo to remain in power beyond his second term.
In 2021, Nnamani discussed his role in halting Obasanjo’s third-term bid during the public presentation of his book STANDING STRONG: Legislative Reforms, Third Term and Other Issues of the 5th Senate. He explained how he played a key role in ensuring the constitutional process prevailed.
Speaking at an interactive session with South East leaders in Enugu, Tinubu recalled the critical moment when Nnamani stood firm against the third-term push, emphasizing that the former Senate President “put life into democracy” and protected the nation’s constitutional freedoms. “The man who saved democracy for us all to enjoy… He put life into freedom, constitutional democracy,” Tinubu said.
