Representing the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) Adejoke Dada, revealed the initiative’s objective to address gaps in timely, affordable, and appropriate healthcare for pregnant women. The program, which will roll out in January 2025, will focus on 15 states with high maternal and infant mortality rates, including Ekiti.

The RESMAT initiative, championed by the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, aims to provide access to quality emergency care for rural pregnant women and children under five. The program will feature the deployment of ambulances to rural wards, ensuring rapid transportation to healthcare facilities. Prosper Ahworegba, a resource person from NEMSAS, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stressing that many maternal and infant deaths in Nigeria occur due to the lack of access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas.

Currently, Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with between 576 and 615 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to just 7 deaths per 100,000 live births in the UK. Ahworegba pointed out that the RESMAT project would help bridge the transportation gap, enabling women to reach comprehensive obstetrics and newborn centers in a timely manner.

Ambulances provided by the World Bank will be stationed in rural wards, serving populations of up to 10,000 people. Users will contribute a nominal fee to ensure the sustainability of the service.

The Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency Ayodele Seluwa, affirmed that the initiative would enhance healthcare access, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and empower communities to take ownership of the system by raising awareness and providing necessary contact information.

This initiative is set to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare in rural Nigeria, addressing one of the country’s most critical health challenges.…READ THE FULL STORY FROM SOURCE : …READ THE FULL STORY FROM SOURCE
