Akunyili remembered for her anti-corruption fight, passed away on June 8, 2014, from ovarian cancer.

Several conspiracies surrounded her death after some doctors in the United States claimed she was misdiagnosed by doctors in Nigeria as having cancer.

The news of her passing was announced by the then-former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on the Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS. Obi stated that Akunyili died after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Many Nigerians believe that Akunyili is irreplaceable as she embodies what Nigeria needs at this particular time in its history.

This is why an old video of her speaking on corruption in the country’s key sectors has resurfaced. In the video that has emerged, Dora Akunyili stated that corrupt individuals are only harming themselves and the future of Nigeria.

“A Nigerian citizenship that they can’t take to the bank otherwise, God will not forgive us. And we talk about inefficiency in the Education sector, health sector, governance and all, everything balls down to corruption and corruption is not just about giving or taking money.”

“Corruption is about not doing the right thing. And why are we corrupt? Because of a lack of understanding, we do not understand that we don’t need too much. Our wants maybe too many, but our needs are very little.”
