In an announcement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account late Wednesday, the NBS informed the public: “We regret to inform you that our website has been hacked, and we are currently working to restore it. Kindly disregard any messages or content that may be posted until the website is fully secured. Thank you for your understanding.”

A quick check of the NBS website around 9:45 p.m. revealed a nearly blank page with a prominent message: “Page Hacked,” suggesting the website had been taken down or altered by unauthorized individuals.

This breach is part of an alarming trend in Nigeria, where cyberattacks targeting government websites and institutions have been on the rise. In March of this year, a major security breach was uncovered when it was revealed that the private website XpressVerify.com had access to sensitive information, including the National Identification Numbers (NINs) and personal data of many Nigerians.

Despite these efforts, the frequency of cyberattacks continues to increase, with experts pointing to the urgent need for stronger defense mechanisms.

Check Point Software Technologies, a prominent global cybersecurity firm, recently highlighted Nigeria’s vulnerability in its latest report. As of July 2024, Nigeria ranks 19th globally in terms of cyber threats. The report further reveals that government entities in Nigeria face an alarming average of 1,791 cyberattacks every week, underscoring the scale and intensity of the challenges faced by public institutions.BREAKING NEWS| WATCH THE VIDEO WHERE HE SAID IT| SEE THE NIGERIA GOVERNOR WHO DECLARES AMNESTY TO CRIMINALS DISTURBING HIS STATE.
