Carey, who served as the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, stepped down after a BBC investigation revealed that he had permitted a priest, who had been banned over sexual abuse allegations, to return to ministry.
The BBC reported that Carey allowed David Tudor, a priest who had been suspended for five years due to allegations of assaulting teenage girls, to resume his duties in the Church in 1994. Documents suggested that Carey even advocated for Tudor’s reappointment to a diocese.
In his resignation letter, sent on December 4, Carey did not directly reference the ongoing investigation but expressed that, at nearly 90 years old, it was time for him to step away from active ministry. “I wish to surrender my Permission to Officiate,” he wrote, reflecting on his long tenure in the ministry since being ordained as a deacon in 1962 and a priest in 1963.
