Former Labour Minister and African National Congress veteran Membathisi Mdladlana has died at the age 72. Mdladlana served as labour minister from 1998 until 2009. A former teacher himself, Mdladlana was the founding president of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), a position he held between 1990 and 1994.

Confirming the news of his death and remembering his uncle on SABC News on Friday afternoon, Madladlana’s nephew Mayibuye Sokupa said the former minister remained passionate about teaching until his last days.

“He dedicated himself back to assisting with teaching programmes that assisted children who were struggling and needed extra lessons. We all know that before he occupied office as a minister, he was the first president of Sadtu. So, teaching remained very important to him.”

At the same time, also speaking to the public broadcaster, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri described Mdladlana as an educationist of note.

Mdladlana also served as the South African high commissioner to Burundi.

“All of these responsibilities that were bestowed on him are a testament to the calibre of this great son of South Africa, as well as our esteemed veteran in the ANC. We are really saddened, and our hearts go out to his family.”
