Two well-known coalitions of civil society organizations, the Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL) and the Center for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness (CCLCA), have expressed their support for a recent court decision about the political climate in Rivers State. In a report by The Independent, the lawsuit, which was filed against the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who are affiliated with Minister Nyesom Wike, was rejected by the Abuja Federal High Court. These lawmakers had faced allegations of defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting the legal action aimed at replacing them. However, the court ruled that the Action People’s Party (APP) lawsuit was statute-barred, having been filed beyond the legally mandated 14-day timeframe.

This verdict has been hailed as a significant moment in Nigeria’s legal system, providing support for Nyesom Wike amid criticism following the defection scandal that emerged in 2023. It is also viewed as a major victory for the 27 legislators, who were legitimately elected to represent their constituencies in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Dr. Gabriel Nwambu, the Director General of CCLCA, issued a statement on behalf of various non-governmental organizations, acknowledging that the judgment may not be welcomed by critics of Rivers State, particularly those who seek to undermine Wike’s legacy. He commended the presiding judge for prioritizing the rule of law and justice over personal biases or misinformation.

Nwambu emphasized the importance of impartiality and justice within the Nigerian judiciary, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara to heed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s advice. He called for the reinstatement of the 27 lawmakers to their positions in the Rivers State House of Assembly as part of a broader reconciliation process among the parties involved.

The call for reconciliation aims to facilitate the full implementation of a peace agreement signed during President Tinubu’s mediation efforts in Abuja. Nwambu stressed that it is essential for Governor Fubara to recognize that those encouraging discord and urging him to turn against his supporters are the true adversaries of Rivers State’s progress and unity.

According to him, “This will pave the way for the full implementation of the peace agreement he signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mediation in the conflict at Aso Rock, Abuja. It is time for Governor Fubara to recognize that those who sow discord and encourage him to turn against those who have supported him are the true enemies of Rivers State.”…..For More READ THE FULL STORY ▶▶
