While the elections are still years away, political officeholders and party leaders are already strategizing for the 2027 race.

This growing preoccupation with the next election has raised concerns among Nigerians, who argue that the priority should be governance and fulfilling the promises made during the 2023 election.

Political figures in both the ruling and opposition parties have reportedly engaged in various alignments and realignments, including talks of new party formations or mergers, all geared towards securing an advantage ahead of the next general election.

At the same time, some state governments and officials in the current administration have started making moves to strengthen their hold on power, even as many Nigerians continue to suffer from the effects of poverty and economic challenges.

Legal experts and public commentators are questioning the timing of these political moves, pointing out that the current government has yet to fulfil its promises to the electorate.

Ladipo Johnson, a national publicity officer for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), expressed concern over the growing focus on 2027.

“Obviously, it is a tough time for Nigerians; the government and elected officials should sit down and work, rather than talk about 2027.

Public affairs analyst Kunle Okunade stated that real governance should tackle the immediate challenges Nigerians face, such as economic instability, the welfare of the masses, and the fight against poverty.

“Whatever policies you are implementing, if it does not fight poverty and hunger, it is a failure. The welfare of the masses should be a priority.

“We can’t be talking of elections all the time; rather, we need policies that would fight poverty and hunger in the land now,” Okunade said.

Amid this early politicking, many Nigerians have grown disillusioned, with critics pointing to the government’s insufficient response to economic difficulties, including the recent removal of the fuel subsidy, which has exacerbated the hardships for many.

Former APC chieftain Salihu Lukman also warned that the 2027 election cycle will not be an easy feat for any political party.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY! He stressed that promises alone are no longer enough to win the trust of Nigerians, who have grown increasingly wary of political rhetoric that fails to translate into meaningful action.…Tap To Read The Full Story Here.
