Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called on communities in Southern Borno to take responsibility for their safety and be prepared to defend themselves against Boko Haram insurgents. During a recent four-day tour of five local government areas in the region, Zulum emphasized that local resistance is crucial to overcoming the insurgency.
“You cannot defeat Boko Haram unless you, the indigenous people, stand up to defend yourselves,” Zulum said. He also advocated for the establishment of a Brigade Command in Southern Borno to address the growing security concerns in the region. Traditional leaders and local government officials echoed the governor’s call for a dedicated military formation in the area, particularly in volatile regions like Dile and Lasa.
The governor highlighted the importance of security for the region’s overall development, stressing that stability is a prerequisite for progress. The Emir of Askira, Alhaji Abdullahi Askirama II, shared the dire situation faced by local leaders, noting that many district heads had fled their communities due to ongoing insurgent attacks. He added that children in these areas have been unable to attend school for over 12 years due to insecurity.
