The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 4, 2025, underscores the escalating threat posed by the insurgent group in northeastern Nigeria.
According to security sources, the terrorists targeted the Sabon Gari camp under the 25 Taskforce Brigade around 4 a.m., deploying a range of sophisticated weaponry. The onslaught, described as both intense and prolonged, lasted for more than two hours. “The terror group invaded the camp using various weapons. So far, we have recovered over seven bodies,” a source revealed on Monday.
In the aftermath, ISWAP insurgents razed several buildings within the base and destroyed military vehicles, leaving extensive damage. The attack exemplifies ISWAP’s growing influence in the region, particularly since the death of Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau. The group has since consolidated its power around Lake Chad, attracting defectors and broadening its operational capabilities.
The Nigerian Army, while acknowledging the severity of the situation, reiterated its commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country.
