On Saturday, President Joe Biden awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, to a select group of influential figures. Among the honorees were Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi, acclaimed actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, and a range of other distinguished individuals.
In addition to the aforementioned, several prominent figures received the Medal of Freedom, including:
- Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State
- Bono, singer and activist
- Ralph Lauren, fashion designer
- Jose Andres, renowned chef
- Earvin “Magic” Johnson, basketball legend
- George Soros, investor and philanthropist
- Bill Nye, scientist and educator
Also honored were Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief; LGBT advocate Tim Gill; philanthropist David Rubenstein; and writer George Stevens Jr.
Posthumous Awards
The event also saw the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Freedom to several notable individuals, including:
- Fannie Lou Hamer, civil rights activist
- Ash Carter, former Secretary of Defense
- Robert F. Kennedy, former Attorney General and U.S. Senator
- George Romney, businessman, former Governor of Michigan, and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Messi’s Absence
While Messi was named as one of the honorees, he was unable to attend the ceremony due to a scheduling conflict.
