The incident, which gained public attention after a viral video showed Nwadigo repeatedly slapping the child during a lesson, has sparked widespread outrage.
Appearing before Magistrate M.O. Kusanu, Nwadigo was charged with two counts of child abuse. She pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed the development in a statement released on X (formerly Twitter).
The statement read:
“Following the ongoing viral case of child abuse, all concerned parties appeared today, 9th January 2024, at the Ogba Magistrate Court. The matter was assigned to Magistrate M.O. Kusanu. Two charges were read to the suspect, to which she pled not guilty.”
During the hearing, Nwadigo’s defense counsel applied for bail, which was granted by the court. The bail conditions included a sum of ₦200,000 and two verifiable sureties.
The agency also disclosed that the suspect has been remanded in a correctional facility pending her ability to meet the bail conditions. The case has been adjourned to January 18, 2024, for trial.
The viral video, which showed Nwadigo slapping Abayomi while attempting to teach him how to write the number six, has triggered public outcry. Many have condemned the teacher’s actions, calling for stricter penalties against educators found guilty of child abuse.
Advocates and organizations have renewed their calls for better training and monitoring of teachers to prevent such incidents.
