“I think someone forgot to say thank you,” Macron remarked. “It’s okay; it will come with time. Ungratefulness, I know too well, is a disease that can’t be transmitted to man, but this is for all African heads of state who have not had the courage, in the face of public opinion, to hold that view. None of them would be sovereign states today if the French army hadn’t deployed in the region.”

Macron paid tribute to French soldiers who had risked and, in some cases, lost their lives during years of counter-terrorism operations. “My heart goes out to all our soldiers,” he said. “We did the right thing. Macron noted that France’s presence in the Sahel was contingent on the request of sovereign states. However, a wave of military coups in the region altered this dynamic, with new regimes prioritizing other agendas over counter-terrorism. “From the moment there were coups d’etat and people said their priority was no longer fighting terrorism… France no longer belonged there,” Macron explained. “We are not at the beck and call of coup leaders. So we left.”

The French military had been progressively asked to withdraw from several Sahel countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Benin. These developments reflect strained relations between France and its former colonies, driven by rising anti-French sentiment and demands for greater autonomy in security matters.
