In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, the Director in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), confirmed that the agency is committed to ensuring public safety and curbing the proliferation of counterfeit food products.
The operation, which was conducted in response to a directive from NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, resulted in the shutdown of eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. These facilities were found to be involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit rice, leading to the seizure of over 1,600 bags of fake rice.
The counterfeit rice was found repackaged in branded bags from popular rice manufacturers, including Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, in a deceptive attempt to mislead consumers. Empty rice bags bearing these well-known brand names were also discovered at the Karu facility, further indicating the scale of the fraudulent activity.
Azikiwe emphasized that the operation was conducted as part of NAFDAC’s efforts to protect public health, particularly during the festive season when the demand for food items is high.
He issued a stern warning to counterfeiters, stating, “We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians. Anyone found engaging in such illegal practices will face the full wrath of the law. The suspects apprehended during this raid will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.”WORST THAN CORONA VIRUS| Mysterious Virus Outbreak Leaves Women And Girls ‘Dancing’ Uncontrollably In Uganda |Tap To View The Trending Video Now.
