Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso criticized these leaders for claiming to represent the North while allegedly acting in their own interests. He argued that their interference undermines democracy by promoting unqualified candidates and creating divisions within communities.
“This oppressive thing they are doing is causing discord in the community. Whatever you do, do it based on the truth,” Kwankwaso stated.
He urged Northern elders to refrain from favoritism and allow citizens to choose their leaders freely, emphasizing that their actions have done more harm than good to the region.
Kwankwaso also condemned claims by some leaders that the North had reached a consensus on preferred candidates. He accused a small group of individuals of spreading lies and manipulating public opinion.
“All these people are not more than two or three, but you see a man going and saying lies,” Kwankwaso said. “Instead of going to Port Harcourt or Abuja to promote us, who are their children, they show favoritism.”
The former NNPP presidential candidate dismissed rumors of a supposed agreement between him and former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (LP). The alleged pact reportedly proposed that Atiku would serve one term as president, followed by Kwankwaso and then Obi.
Kwankwaso categorically denied the existence of such an agreement, expressing discontent with the rumors.
“This issue really hurts me. It is said that the elders are lying; they are saying things that have not been done,” he said.
He added that he had heard of meetings held by Atiku’s group with local leaders and clerics to discuss plans for 2027, but reiterated that he was not part of any such arrangement.
