He pointed out that, as the eyes and ears of their constituencies, lawmakers are often the first port of call for citizens facing hardships, such as struggling to afford basic goods like rice in the market.
Akpabio made the statement on Wednesday during the joint session of the National Assembly when President Tinubu presented the 2025 budget proposal, which totals ₦47.9 trillion. The Senate President reaffirmed that members of the National Assembly, both in the Senate and the House of Representatives, will continue to serve as the President’s eyes throughout the country.
“We, the Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the House of Representatives, are your eyes in our constituencies and in every corner of Nigeria. While you cannot be everywhere, we are there to see and feel the pulse of the people,” Akpabio said. “When our constituents are struggling to buy rice, they come to us. When they experience hardship, they seek our help. And when the economic alarm sounds, they look to us for intervention.”BREAKING NEWS| WATCH THE VIDEO WHERE HE SAID IT| SEE THE NIGERIA GOVERNOR WHO DECLARES AMNESTY TO CRIMINALS DISTURBING HIS STATE.
He emphasized that lawmakers are committed to ensuring that the Appropriation Bills reflect the needs and hopes of ordinary Nigerians, signaling the potential for an economic resurgence under Tinubu’s leadership. “Through these Appropriation Bills, we will ensure that you reach the hearts of Nigerians, touching their hopes and signaling the dawn of Nigeria’s economic rebirth,” Akpabio added.
In his remarks, the Senate President also commended President Tinubu for his achievements in the 18 months since assuming office. He highlighted several key accomplishments, noting that Nigerians were increasingly aware of the progress made under Tinubu’s administration.
“Under your leadership, Nigeria has seen impressive progress: you have doubled government revenues to over ₦18.32 trillion, reduced debt servicing from 97% to 68%, fulfilled foreign exchange obligations of $7.5 billion, and increased oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day,” Akpabio said. He also noted the launch of the Compressed Natural Gas initiative, as well as the processing of ₦45.6 billion in student payments, the signing of the National Minimum Wage Law, and the increase of the national minimum wage to ₦70,000 per month.
Akpabio assured President Tinubu that the 2025 Appropriation Bills would undergo swift evaluation and passage. He emphasized that lawmakers would ensure that all procedural requirements were met in the passage of the budget, including public hearings to allow citizens’ voices to be heard. “We will conduct public hearings to ensure that the voices of Nigerians are incorporated into the budget. After all, budgets belong to the people,” he stated. Akpabio also clarified that any necessary adjustments to allocations would be made based on public sentiment, and that such changes would not be misinterpreted as “padding” the budget.BREAKING NEWS| WATCH THE VIDEO WHERE HE SAID IT| SEE THE NIGERIA GOVERNOR WHO DECLARES AMNESTY TO CRIMINALS DISTURBING HIS STATE.
