Speaking at the 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) on Thursday, the IGP remarked that Lagos had made significant strides in curbing criminal activities, especially armed robberies and bank heists. He pointed out that, since 2007, there has only been one successful bank robbery in the state, which occurred in 2014, underscoring how far the state has come in terms of security.

“What we are doing here today is the usual assistance that the state government has been giving to the police in the state. Without the assistance that the police receive from the government, we would not be able to do as much as we have done in Lagos State. We would have been overwhelmed with insecurity,” Egbetokun stated.

He also acknowledged the challenges posed by Lagos’ status as a hub for internal migration, with thousands of people moving to the state daily. This constant influx of residents, Egbetokun noted, necessitates that security strategies continually evolve to address emerging threats.IS THE BOY RIGHT FOR DOING THIS? Governor Sanwo-Olu Strengthens Police Operations with New Equipment

At the event, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the police in the fight against crime. In a significant move to enhance security operations, Governor Sanwo-Olu donated over 250 brand-new patrol vehicles, communications gadgets, protective gear, and other essential equipment to the police.

“We continue to provide critical resources to our security agencies to ensure they can effectively tackle the evolving security challenges in Lagos,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said, adding that the deployment of drone technology would further bolster monitoring and crime-fighting efforts.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also outlined the progress made in the state’s mapping and digitalization initiatives. He revealed that Lagos is now fully mapped, and that drone technology would be used to monitor both the city’s waterways and densely populated areas. The drones will also assist in crowd management and traffic assessments, enhancing real-time surveillance and facilitating quicker response times to incidents.

“The EGIS component of our mapping and digitalization has almost been completed. Lagos is now properly mapped, and drone technology will be deployed at appropriate levels to ensure that both our waterways and densely populated areas are effectively monitored. This will also aid in crowd management and traffic assessment,” the governor said.

Collaboration Between Government and Security Agencies

The IGP’s praise for the state government’s role in improving security highlights the crucial partnership between the police and the Lagos State government. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s ongoing efforts to modernize security infrastructure, along with the introduction of advanced technology, are seen as essential in maintaining public safety in one of Africa’s most populous and economically vibrant cities.

The collaboration between the police and the Lagos State government reflects a proactive approach to tackling crime, one that relies on both resource allocation and innovative solutions to meet the unique challenges posed by a rapidly growing urban population.
