Expressing his disapproval via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi described the omission as discriminatory and detrimental to the equitable development and peace required for Nigeria’s progress.
Obi Highlights North Central’s Urgent Needs
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, emphasized the critical challenges faced by the North Central region, underscoring the necessity for special attention. He noted that the region has been plagued by relentless terror attacks, banditry, and communal conflicts, which have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of families. States like Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger have been particularly affected, with thousands of residents forced into internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
“The exclusion of the North Central Regional Commission from the budgetary allocations provided to other regional commissions in the 2025 proposed budget is deeply troubling and must be urgently reversed,” Obi stated.
Budgetary Exclusion Sparks Concern
According to Obi, the Federal Government’s proposed budget allocates a total of ₦2.493 trillion to five regional development commissions, yet it conspicuously omits the North Central Regional Commission. This omission, he argued, neglects the pressing needs of a region that serves as Nigeria’s agricultural backbone and is vital to the country’s overall stability and development.
“These persistent tragedies have made the North Central one of the most affected and vulnerable regions in Nigeria. “I, therefore, call on the government and National Assembly to urgently review and rectify this decision that will impact negatively on the region and an area most needed for the development of the country,” Obi urged.

Reaffirming his commitment to a more inclusive Nigeria, Obi concluded with a message of hope and determination: “Together, we must work toward a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria. A New Nigeria is not just a dream.”
