Azuta-Mbata, a former senator who represented Rivers East in the National Assembly, will succeed Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu. Chukwu had been appointed to complete the tenure of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu from Imo State.

Before Azuta-Mbata’s emergence, the election process faced challenges from factional divisions. Dr. Jackson Omenazu and Uche Okwukwu were separately declared as President General by rival election committees. However, the General Assembly’s consensus vote has resolved these disputes, solidifying Azuta-Mbata’s leadership.
