Utweets reports that the ₦1.18 trillion budget was presented to a faction of the State House of Assembly loyal to the governor, a move the APC alleges contravenes a court ruling.
APC’s Condemnation
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, APC Chairman Tony Okocha accused Governor Fubara of bypassing the legitimate legislative body. Okocha referenced a January 2024 ruling by Justice James Omotosho, which affirmed the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly as the legitimate legislative authority.
“It is unimaginable and unthinkable that a governor with such a rich background in Finance and Governance would choose to sidestep legal processes,” Okocha stated.
He noted that Rivers State has 30 active Assembly members, but the budget was presented to only three members of a faction led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.
Legislative Concerns
Okocha, who served as Chief of Staff from 2012 to 2015, drew on his experience with previous budget presentations to emphasize the irregularity of the governor’s actions.
“The Assembly has 30 functional members, yet the budget was presented in a setting that courts have described as illegitimate. This undermines the integrity of governance in a state as prominent as Rivers.”
He dismissed the session as a “forum of friends” rather than a legitimate legislative gathering, warning that such actions could further erode trust in the state’s governance structures.
Criticism of Leadership Style
Okocha also criticized Governor Fubara’s leadership, accusing him of fostering division rather than promoting reconciliation in Rivers State.
“I expected the governor to use the new year to extend an olive branch and promote peace, but instead, he continues to fuel the flames of division,” Okocha lamented.
He warned that the governor’s approach could escalate political tensions in the coming year.
Clarification on Lawmakers’ Allegiances
Despite the political turmoil, Okocha clarified that none of the 27 lawmakers aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike have defected to the APC. He stated that their allegiance remains firmly with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“As far as their membership is concerned, they remain PDP members. I lost that bid, but my focus remains on progress, not on joining the governor’s journey to self-destruction,” he concluded.STRANGE INDEED!
